Ask Erasure - "Andy Bell (Dec 2003)"
This Ask Erasure feature publishes the responses that Andy and Vince have given to questions that people have sent in. Feel free to submit questions via the Contact section.

01) Given that you've had a few brief roles in films. If Hollywood came calling for you to play the lead part, what type of film would you like it to be, and whom would you like as co-stars? (Kelly Reid)

Andy: I wouldn't mind being in any kind of film 'cause it's all fantasy, I'd probably steer away from War movies or promoting gun crime films.

Probably my best bet would be a fantasy musical even a foreign language film would be good. Have you seen "8 Women" a French musical black comedy with Catherine Deneuve something classy like that or spooky like David Lynch as for co-stars anyone…

02) Andy has once mentioned that Paul Hickey was writing a book about his life. If this is true, could you please ask him when the book will be released and which title it will have? (Katja)

Andy: He's right in the middle of it now & has signed with a renowned agency, a working title "Happiness Is The Best Face Lift". Shall probably be released in Autumn 2004.

03) One of my all time favourite songs is "Hideaway" because of the beautiful lyrics. I just wondered, is it autobiographical? (Jane Gasson)

Andy: This is an imagined experience because one of my friends at the London Gay Youth Group (a long time ago now) was kicked out of his Mum's & Dad's house. Can you imagine how devastating this must be, very cruel?

04) I would like to ask, what would Andy and Vince say were the most memorable high and low points of their careers together so far? (Karl Watkinson)

Andy: Don't like to ponder too much on the past, love working with Vince always look forward to the next thing, still get excited & nervous after all these years.

05) During 18 years people must have asked you same things many times. I would like to know if there is a question you wished to but were never asked. Now you have the opportunity - ask and answer! (Karel Kulhavy)

Andy: What makes a singer sing? I have no idea perhaps an unnerving zest for life.

06) What the bloomin heck is the Make Me Smile video all about?! (Ros Thomas)

Andy: Je n'ai pas aucune idee!

07) When you write some of your songs (i.e Oh L'amour, I Love To Hate You, and other songs that seem to be focused on an individual) are they from a personal experience or just something you may have created from your imagination? (Lucas Hart)

Andy: Not meaning to sound all arty-farty now songs are like focussed balls of energy that are thrown at an imaginary person.

08) Have either of you ever been stalked by a fan, if yes, what did they do? (Pat Plant)

Andy: No! Though I have had a few strangers claiming to be ex-boyfriends but surely my memory isn't that bad.

09) What's your favourite toy? (Stefan Zatko)

Andy: Very easy to please right now a Hulk Stretch Armstrong.

10) I've always wanted to ask you whether you've ever consider the idea of touring the whole world like in 1997 (Tommaso Tognotti)

Andy: I wouldn't mind but would have to pace myself very carefully am much more fragile than I used to be 'Oh the folly of youth!'

11) I have heard that the voice of a singer changes over the years. Have you had the same experience with your voice? (Tonny Krogh)

Andy: I think my voice has become slightly deeper, gruffer & richer, can't seem to sing to well with a cold now.

12) Recent topics on the discussion list have been centred around artwork and themes for albums. How does the theme of an album get started, modified or re-tooled to get to the final released concept and how much input do the two of you have in coming up with this? (Randy Minten)

Andy: An album seems to hone itself together out of nothing like a piece of stone or clay, you never know what it's going to be like until it's finished & 'tis never like you imagined in the first place. As for the artwork sometimes you become very close & embroiled other times you just throw caution to the wind, I think you can probably tell which ones were which!

13) How well do you remember all the different venues and sets you have played over the years? (Ed Adkins)

Andy: Different venues & towns become vaguely familiar through the years it can be quite eerie sometimes with an innate feeling of 'déjà vu'. The sets kind of merge into one big blob after a while.
