Ask Erasure - "Vince Clarke (Nov 2003)"
This Ask Erasure feature publishes the responses that Andy and Vince have given to questions that people have sent in. Feel free to submit questions via the Contact section.

01) One very obvious difference between all Erasure albums is how your programming style and sounds differ from album to album. Which album so far is the best sounding to you, and which one did you enjoy programming the most? (Theunis Uys)

Vince: I think the album titled "Erasure" is the best sounding so far. And the album I enjoyed programming the most is "Chorus". This album was programmed on Roland MC4 analog sequencers and proved to be the most challenging.

02) When you start to program a sound do you have something in mind or is it just a matter of getting some patch cables out and see where it takes you? (Adrian Winterton)

Vince: I usually have a sound in mind when I begin to program and then end up with something completely different. This is what makes working in the studio so interesting for me.

03) Just curious to know what other interests Vince has besides music. (James Foster)

Vince: Besides music, I'm interested in: books, eating, hiking, and video making.

04) Would Vince ever think about collaborating with a band like Kraftwerk or do what Electronic did and make an album with Karl Bartos? (Enzo Mulé)

Vince: I'd love to just be in the studio at the same time as Kraftwerk to see first hand how they produce their music.

05) What are your best & worst moments from the tour? (Donna Tandy)

Vince: The worst moment of the tour was the beginning and the best the end.(only joking).

06) How come you got started (and kept on going) in the synthesizer or "synthpop" genre?. (Johan Billing)

Vince: I love pop music and I love synthesizers.

07) If you had to choose one song you have written and recorded to always be remembered for, what would it be? (Jim Brady)

Vince: One of the songs I'm most proud of is "Blue Savannah".

08) Out of all the gigs you have ever played, is there one particular gig which stands out as most memorable and if so why? (Louise Child)

Vince: The most memorable concert was the night we performed in Prague for the first time. As our records were unavailable in Czechoslovakia then, half of the audience held ghetto blasters up in the air for 90 minutes to record the gig. It was incredibly moving.

09) Have you ever been tempted to release an independent, low-budget, totally non commercial album? (Riley Rempel)

Vince: This is kind of what we do already. Whether a record turns out to be commercial or not, is out of our control.

10) What are you usually doing / going through your mind 5 minutes before you're due to go on stage? (Ros Thomas)

Vince: I'm usually pacing the room and visualizing all of the things that might go wrong.

11) With your fondness for Simon & Garfunkel, I'm surprised that Erasure have yet to cover any of their songs. Were they even considered during "other people's songs" or at any point in your career? (Scott Mueller)

Vince: I'm not sure we could add to or improve the original recordings.

12) Do you enjoy living in NY? (Daniel Jaworski)

Vince: I love living in New York with my girlfriend, Tracy. I love the energy.
