Vince Clarke (Dec 2005)
This Ask Erasure feature publishes the responses that Andy and Vince have given to questions that people have sent in. Feel free to submit questions via the Contact section.

1) For the next album, will you use soft synths again or will you use the 'old' "real" synths? (Andr?s H)

Vince: I'm hoping to use a combination of both analog and soft-synth.

2) Do you have alredy any particular idea about the next Erasure album's direction? How will it sound or any special title / theme? (Roman Hernandez)

Vince: We are thinking of making a more dance orientated record, as electronic sounding as possible.

3) I was wondering how Vince feels as a new Daddy. Does he sing lullabies to little Oscar or does he prefer to play them? (Karel Kulhavy)

Vince: Tired! I sing to Oscar occasionally, but with a voice like mine, it rarely puts him to sleep.

4) I think you'd make a rather good Doctor Who villain. What would your plan for world domination be? (Stephen Gilmour)

Vince: In order to achieve world domination it is vitally important that my cunning plan remains a secret.

5) Have you ever considered releasing a Vince only CD? Specifically a collection of your favorite tracks with all vocal work removed so that your synth work alone makes up the track? (Andrew)

Vince: I don't think that would make a very interesting record. (I need my Andy!)

6) I really enjoy pieces like "Crying In The Rain", "Perchance To Dream", "Moon And The Sky" and think they are an interesting shift to something new. Was this shift intended at the time? Was Erasure trying to test the reaction of its fans? Are we to expect more of these compositions in the future? I hope so. (Witchinditch)

Vince: When we write songs, we never really know how they're going to turn out until we work on them them in the studio. The direction they take is down to a lot of experimentation and also MISTAKES!

7) On your recent Erasure Show tour, is there are a particular show that stands out in your memory and if so, why? (Somia)

Vince: The last one (because it was the last one...kidding). No I don't have a favorite, I kinda' got a kick out of all the gigs we played on the last tour.

8) Can you describe your current composing process that you used for "The Erasure Show"? Do you start putting the songs together from scratch or do you start working with a previous version? How do you feel embracing new technology has impacted your creativity? (Joshua Klinman)

Vince: I leave it to Andy to put the set together, then we get a bunch of designers to put together ideas for the visual aspect of the show. The new technology has just made the creative process 'different' and forced me to learn new stuff. (and read manuals)

9) With the Acoustic Album coming up, have you ever considered doing a tour or album with more "real" instruments Drums, Guitars etc. for a change? (Kevin W)

Vince: We hope to tour the acoustic album in April 2006 with a bunch of musicians from the States (guitar, pedal steel, banjo etc...)

10) If you both did a Room 101 slot - what would be your top 5 entrants? (Caroline Allen)

Vince: Reality TV, Duran Duran, Non-smoking bars, Salt and vinegar crisps and George Bush

11) I would like to ask Vince for Erasure's 21st Birthday next year do the band have anything special planned to celebrate it? For example a one off gig at the new Wembly Stadium similar in ways to the Milton Keynes gig? Do you think it could be done? (Adam Wolke)

Vince: We haven't got any plans at the moment, but a special 'fans only gig' might be a good idea.

12) Which album according to rumour was supposedly accidentally "erased" due to the labelling being "erasure"? (Barbara)

Vince: A recording session for radio 1 featuring songs re-recorded from our first album was accidently erased by an engineer at the BBC.

13) Is there any special synth software or keyboard you haven't already used in a recording and that you'd like to work with for on a future album? (Roman Hernandez)

Vince: The software version of the Arp 2600
